It’s Been Too Long!

It’s been far too long since I last posted, sorry! Can only attribute it to my being very busy organising OuseFest and getting out of the habit, and we’ve been very busy (see below).

We did manage to get some boating in during July. We had a paid towing job for Willow, taking a neighbour’s Springer Maya to Earith to have work done, which meant a trip down the Old West River to Earith and back to Ely in a day. Unfortunately it was the wettest day of July! But we were “working boaters” for a day which was fun. Then we went to OuseFest at Denver event by boat, and we also hopped up to Downham Market along the Relief Channel for a few days. We stopped in Ely on the way there and back which is always nice, and our friend Kate did the trip out to Denver and back with us on her boat Odessa. Lovely to have her along!

Back home along the Great Ouse

Then, once back in Cambridge there was change afoot for both James and I career-wise.

First, me – I had a brilliant time working for the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership, and so when my internship came to and end I was really sad to be leaving. But I heard that another Heritage Lottery funded landscape partnership, Breaking New Ground in the Brecks was looking for someone, so I decided to apply! I am now working two days a week with them, doing community engagement, web content editing and office admin, based in Brandon Country Park. I’m having a wonderful time promoting the beautiful and underappreciated landscape of the Norfolk and Suffolk Brecks, which includes Thetford Forest and the surrounding ancient heathland.

It’s perfect because the part time position means I can continue to work on my PhD alongside. (And to assuage any worries from family and friends about postal addresses changing, I’m still going to be in my usual office three days a week working hard on the thesis, so able to pick up post as usual!)

James has also been busy, and on 7th August he passed the MCA qualification to gain his Boatmaster Tier 2 Level 1 licence, so he’s now qualified to take up to 110 passengers on the Cam and non tidal Ouse, plus all canals! He’s in his element, getting paid to go boating and as it’s high season for the trip boat he’s been very busy!
